At the January 5, 2026 Meeting of the LA Board of Public Works (p.483), a contract was approved for construction to close the gap on the Chandler Boulevard Cycletrack between Vineland Ave in North Hollywood and Leghorn Ave in Sherman Oaks. This will allow Valley Village residents to take advantage of the full length of the bikeway, when it is completed. The full bikeway is a 21-mile continuous “Cyclists’ Highway” running East-West across the San Fernando Valley from Mariposa St. in Burbank to Lassen St. in Chatsworth and connecting with the LA Metro North Hollywood station.
Project Scope
The proposed scope of work includes removing existing concrete median islands; reconstructing street pavements, curb and gutter, and curb ramps to current accessibility standards; modifying existing traffic signal modifications; and installing concrete transit platforms, geometric striping, signage, and Class IV bike lanes with raised rubber defenders and K-71 bollards. The project is due for construction in the next few months.
Bidding Delays
It seems the project was delayed when the city engineer’s estimate was half what actual bidders were bidding. Staff believe that the scale and complexity of the traffic signal and striping work, temporary worksite traffic control, and compliance with the Disadvantage Business Enterprise (DBE) participation requirements of this project are reasons for the high bids received. Environmental, the winning bidder, has worked on numerous contracts issued by the Board. No significant or unresolved problems in inspection, contract compliance or bidder responsibility have been experienced by the BCA.
Project Funding
The Project is federally funded with $2,630,000 from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program and state funded with $1,900,000 from the Priority Legislative Budget Project State Earmark. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation’s (LADOT) Transportation Grant Fund, Fund No. 655, Department No. 94, Appropriation Unit No. 94RT0J provides the City’s front funding and local match.
Additional local funding comes from the Vision Zero Corridor Projects, Senate Bill 1 (SB1), Fund No. 59V, Department No. 50, Appropriation Unit No. 50WKGD and Fund No. 59V, Department No. 50, Appropriation Unit No. 50TKGD.
